Meta Opens Muse to DIY Hardware With New Muse Gadgets Project

Meta’s Muse Gadgets project gives developers open-source SDKs to connect their AI agent to custom displays, sensors, controls and home devices.

Meta is opening its Muse AI agent to custom hardware through a new open-source project for developers, hobbyists, and hardware tinkerers.

Muse is designed to act on a user’s behalf rather than answer questions. It can handle tasks such as booking travel, filling out forms and shopping, and Meta is now giving developers a way to connect those capabilities to physical devices.

Muse Gadgets provides open-source firmware and a Linux software development kit that developers can use to connect Muse to their own devices. Meta suggests projects ranging from adding a colour e-ink display to building a compact device that connects to a television through HDMI.

Muse can connect to custom hardware

The project supports inexpensive hardware including Raspberry Pi computers and ESP32 development boards. Developers can connect Muse to components such as displays, buttons, sensors and actuators, making it possible to build AI-powered devices around existing electronics rather than relying on Meta-designed hardware.

Meta has also created a Discord community for developers working with the project, giving users a place to share projects and get support.

Meta has already used the software to build Muse Home Link, a USB-C-powered device that connects Muse to a home network and lets it communicate with compatible devices, including speakers and smart TVs Nat Friedman, head of product at Meta’s Superintelligence Labs, said Meta produced 5,000 Home Link devices and is offering them free to Muse subscribers while supplies last.

Friedman said the devices would be ready to ship within a few weeks. The limited hardware release shows what developers can build with the same underlying Muse Gadgets tools.

Muse Gadgets extends Meta’s effort to move Muse beyond a software-only assistant by giving developers a way to bring its task-handling capabilities into physical devices.
