Microsoft is giving Xbox owners more control over how their consoles look, sound and operate. A new Xbox Insider update introduces customisable startup animations, faster searches for games and achievements, improved Remote Play streaming and background-noise reduction for voice chat.
Announced on September 9, 2026, the update focuses on everyday improvements rather than major changes to the Xbox dashboard. Players can revisit startup animations from previous Xbox generations, organise profile badges and access several features designed to make gaming more convenient.
The additions are initially available through the Xbox Insider program, with some features restricted to specific preview groups or Xbox Series X|S consoles. Microsoft has not announced a universal release date for every improvement.
Xbox Lets Players Choose Classic Startup Animations
The most visible addition is a new option for selecting the animation displayed when an Xbox console starts. Instead of using only the current startup sequence, Xbox Insiders can choose animations representing different periods of the platform’s history.
Microsoft says the available options span the Xbox One generation through the latest Xbox consoles. The announced selection does not include the original Xbox and Xbox 360 startup sequences.
Players can access the setting through Settings > System > Startup, where they can also choose whether the animation plays with sound. The feature adds a small but welcome level of customisation to an experience that has traditionally offered limited personalisation.
In its official Xbox Wire announcement, Microsoft positioned the change as part of a broader effort to give players more control over their console experience.
Local Search Makes Games and Achievements Easier to Find
Microsoft is also introducing local search within several Xbox interface sections. The feature lets players search large collections of games and achievements instead of repeatedly scrolling through long lists.
Local search works in My games & apps, official club achievement lists and individual profile achievement histories. It operates alongside existing sorting and filtering controls, giving users another way to locate specific content.
This is particularly useful for players who have accumulated extensive digital libraries through purchases, subscriptions and years of Xbox gaming. The improvement doesn’t expand the Xbox Store search system; it focuses on finding items within existing collections and achievement records.
Profile customisation is also getting attention. Xbox Insiders can now display up to five earned badges on their profile cards and hide individual badges from their public profiles.
Xbox Remote Play Gains 1440p Streaming Support
Xbox Series X|S owners participating in the Alpha and Alpha Skip-Ahead preview groups can test higher-quality Remote Play streaming. The update supports resolutions up to 1440p and increased video bitrates on compatible devices.
Remote Play lets users stream games directly from their Xbox consoles to supported PCs, phones, televisions, and other devices. Unlike Xbox Cloud Gaming, it uses the player’s home console’s processing power rather than Microsoft’s remote servers.
The higher resolution should make fine details easier to see when network conditions are favourable, although actual picture quality depends on connection speed, stability and device compatibility.
Microsoft recommends setting the console’s display resolution to 1440p or 4K UHD to benefit from the improvements. When streaming quality is set to automatic, Remote Play selects an appropriate resolution and bitrate based on the connected device and available network capacity.
The improvement is especially useful for players who regularly access their consoles from another room or while away from home. However, Microsoft has not confirmed when enhanced 1440p Remote Play will become available to all Xbox owners.
Background Downloads Continue During Cloud Gaming
Another update addresses interruptions between cloud streaming and local downloads. Since June, Xbox Insiders have been able to begin streaming supported games while they install or update, but downloads previously faced additional restrictions during those sessions.
The latest change lets downloads continue in the background while a player streams a game, as long as network conditions can handle both activities.
Xbox Series X|S consoles are expected to benefit most. Users can manage the feature under Settings > Cloud gaming > Streaming preferences and turn it off if they prefer to reserve more bandwidth for streaming.
It is a practical improvement for players who want to try a game through cloud streaming while preparing a local installation. Download speeds and streaming stability will still depend on the available internet connection.
Voice Clarity Reduces Background Noise in Xbox Chat
Microsoft is introducing Voice Clarity for Xbox Series X|S users participating in the Insider program. The feature reduces everyday background noise during voice communication, making conversations easier to understand.
Voice Clarity is enabled by default in Xbox party chat and most games released since 2020. Players can adjust the setting through Settings > General > Volume & audio output > Additional options.
The feature may be particularly useful for players using microphones in shared living spaces, where sounds from televisions, fans and other household activity can interfere with conversations.
Microsoft is also testing behind-the-scenes improvements to party-chat reliability and security. These changes don’t add a prominent new interface feature, but they are intended to make group communication more dependable.
Who Can Access the New Xbox Features?
The September update is part of Microsoft’s Xbox Insider testing program, meaning availability varies by console model and preview enrollment. Eligible Insider participants are getting custom startup animations, local search, and profile badge controls, while enhanced Remote Play and Voice Clarity require additional hardware or preview-group enrollment.
Players interested in early access can join Microsoft’s Xbox Insider program, though participation doesn’t guarantee immediate access to every experimental feature.
Preview releases can also change before reaching the general public. Microsoft uses participant feedback to identify problems and refine features, so settings and availability may differ when the updates receive broader distribution.
What the Update Means for Xbox Owners
None of these changes transforms the Xbox gaming experience on its own, but several address frustrations that become more noticeable with regular use. Local search makes large game libraries easier to navigate, higher-resolution Remote Play improves flexibility, and background downloads reduce unnecessary interruptions.
Voice Clarity could immediately benefit players who use party chat often, while customisable startup animations add a welcome touch of nostalgia. Together, the features suggest that Microsoft is paying attention to the smaller details of console ownership.
The main limitation is availability. These improvements remain tied to the Insider program, and Microsoft has not established a complete public rollout schedule. For now, eligible testers can explore the changes while other Xbox owners await broader distribution.
Rather than introducing another major dashboard redesign, Microsoft is refining how players interact with their existing consoles. For an established platform such as Xbox Series X|S, those practical improvements may ultimately matter more than another visual overhaul.
